Daily Brief Editorial Team

The Daily Brief is the work of unique interaction between three key communities:

  • Region Heads -- senior academics at Oxford and other universities, who help identify key themes and frame questions that need answering;
  • In-house professional staff, who are experts in their own right and ensure that coverage is of the highest standard and in line with clients' interests; and
  • Network contributors, drawn from universities and think tanks around the world, who are commissioned to provide analysis on specific topics. We do not make our network contributors public.

Graham Hutchings

Managing Editor

Writer, lecturer and consultant on China. Author of Modern China: A Companion to a Rising Power, and of articles and book reviews in The China Quarterly, Asian Affairs, The Times Literary Supplement, and The World Today. Former China Correspondent of The Daily Telegraph based in Beijing and Hong Kong. Regular contributor to BBC TV and radio. Advisor on China to the Bank of Montreal. Visiting Lecturer in International Journalism, City University. Regular contributor since 1988 to the Oxford Analytica Daily Brief, the annual Oxford Analytica International Conference, and Oxford Analytica's Consulting Practice.

Dr. Neil Pyper

Senior Editor, International Politics

Current position since May 2005; previously Latin America Editor, Oxford Analytica. Formerly a research analyst at a London-based country intelligence consultancy; also taught at the University of Liverpool. Has published reports and features in Jane's Sentinel and Jane's Defence Weekly, and given regular media interviews. Holds a PhD and BA (First Class), University of Liverpool.

International Region Heads

Dr Valpy Fitzgerald

Professor of International Economics and Finance, Department of International Development, University of Oxford

Research interests include the influence of international finance on macroeconomic policy, private investment behaviour, investment flows to emerging markets, and economic development in Latin America. Adviser to UK government, OECD and various UN agencies.

Sir Colin McColl

Honorary Fellow, The Queen's College, University of Oxford

Formerly worked in the Foreign Service. Director of Scottish American Investment Trust, Advisory Director of Mantech International, Pegasus Security Group and Campbell Lutyens Ltd.

Dr Terry O’Shaughnessy

Tutorial Fellow in Economics, St Anne's College, University of Oxford

Research interests include macroeconomic theory and policy, trade policy, and the economics of education. Previously fellow of King’s College, Cambridge. Member of the Editorial Board of the Cambridge Journal of Economics.

Dr Rory Macleod

Former head of the Global Fixed Income and Currency team at Baring Asset Management in London, also holds a D.Phil in Politics from University of Oxford. From 1985 to 1989, worked in Saudi Arabia as an advisor to the Saudi government, and from 1989 to date has travelled regularly on business to Saudi Arabia.

Science & Technology Region Heads

Dr David Shotton

Reader in Image Bioinformatics, Department of Zoology, University of Oxford; Fellow, Wolfson College, University of Oxford; Lecturer in Cell Biology, Christ Church, University of Oxford

Educated as a biochemist and with a Ph.D. in molecular biology, David Shotton pursued an academic research career in cell biology and advanced microscopy techniques before switching to biomedical information management. He now leads the Image Bioinformatics Research Group at Oxford University, researching the use of web and semantic web technologies to enable sharing and re-use of biomedical research data, particularly images.
