Decentralisation has increased state capacity considerably, and operations in India are more reliant on interaction with state level bodies than with the federal government in Delhi. The Oxford Analytica India State Index reveals a wide variation in state performances, highlighting the crucial influence state specific factors exert on India’s variable business outlook. The study’s findings emphasise the extent to which familiarity with local operating environments is key to successful operations.
About the index
The study assesses India’s 28 states and two major union territories (Delhi and Puducherry) via the comparative framework of the Oxford Analytica India State Index. The index ranks the states across five categories capable of impacting their operational environment - Governance, Economic Environment, Cost of Doing Business, Infrastructure and Human Capital. Using a research team on the ground in India, data on eighty-two individual indicators was collected to measure state performance in each category.
Report format
The study analyses the numeric rankings produced by the index in greater depth, in order to identify potential challenges and opportunities. In keeping with Oxford Analytica’s commitment to providing timely, independent, forward-looking analysis – as in our Daily Brief coverage and other Consulting work – the study identifies current trends as well as future states to watch, enabling clients to make informed decisions which anticipate future developments.
